Area Guide
History
Sonoma County was originally the home of the Pomo, Miwok, and Wappo tribes from about 8000 BC to 5000 BC. This county was settled in by various Europeans but Russia was the first to claim this land. Fort Ross was established under the Russian-American Company in 1812. Russians later abandoned the land in 1841 when they sold it to John Sutter—who was also granted other Californian land from Mexico. Sonoma County was one of the original counties which were established when California became a state in 1850. The city of Sonoma began to deteriorate in terms of commerce and population by the time California was made a state. The county seat was then moved to Santa Rosa.
Since its original settlement in the mid 1500’s, Sonoma County has been claimed by six different nations. It started with the Spanish Empire, then the Kingdom of England, again by the later Spanish Empire, Russian Empire, the First Mexican Empire, next the Mexican Republic, then the California Republic, and finally the United States from July 9, 1846 to now.

Parks and Recreation
Sonoma County is located off of the West Coast. Its location allows for some of the most beautiful beaches and state parks with sites to see like the migration of the Pacific Grey Whale. There are beautiful trails and a range of water sport activities to partake in.
