Marin County is part of the original 27 counties of the state of California. For thousands of years the Miwok Indians inhabited Marin. Sir Francis Drake first arrived in Marin in 1579 and deemed the land ‘Nova Albion’. In 1817 the first Spanish settlement was founded in Marin out of response to the Russians building Fort Ross in the neighboring present-day Sonoma County. San Rafael, located in the south potion of Marin, was the 20 th Spanish mission and was claimed just 4 year prior to Mexico gaining their independence from Spain.
Present-day Marin County consists of many historical sites and museums in appreciation and preservation of Marin’s history,
